Best soap molds for beginners

A mould is a commitment to a batch size. Here is what each type holds, what it yields, and which one to buy first.

Short answer

Start with a silicone-lined wooden loaf mould around 2007 ml, which takes roughly 1304 g of oils and yields about a dozen 100 g bars. It is small enough that a failed batch is not expensive, big enough to be worth the setup, and the size nearly every published recipe is written for.

A soap mould looks like the least consequential purchase in the kit and is actually one of the more consequential ones, because it fixes your batch size. Every recipe you make from then on is scaled to fit it, and every bar you cut is whatever thickness that loaf divides into.

The sizes below are worked out from their dimensions rather than taken from a listing — a "10 inch loaf" is 10 × 3.5 × 3.5 inches, which is 2007 ml, which takes about 1304 g of oils and makes around 16 bars at 100 g. Moulds sold under the same name do vary, so measure the inside of whatever you buy.

What to judge a mould on

The batch size it locks you into

A mould you cannot fill is a mould you will not use. Work out the oils it takes before buying — 1304 g for a standard loaf — and be honest about whether you want to make that much every time.

Silicone liner in a wooden box

The best of both. The wood insulates, which helps a batch gel evenly; the silicone releases without lining paper and without the creases lining paper leaves down the sides of every bar.

Rigidity

A bare silicone loaf with no outer support bulges when full, and you get bars that are wider at the bottom than the top. If a mould has no box, it needs to sit inside something that does not flex.

Depth you can actually pour to

Never fill to the brim — a gelling batch rises, and a loaf overflowing with caustic batter is genuinely unpleasant. Calculate to a pour depth about an inch below the top and treat that as the real capacity.

Cavity moulds are a different tool

Individual cavities give you finished bars with no cutting, which is tempting. They also make swirling nearly impossible, unmould later because each bar cools separately, and lock the bar weight to whatever the cavity is.

Before you buy

Measure the inside, not the listing

Listings quote external dimensions surprisingly often. Measure the internal length, width and your intended pour depth, and work the capacity out from those.

A lined shoebox works for batch one

Any rigid box lined with freezer paper will hold a first batch. Spending on a mould before you know you enjoy this is the wrong order.

Buy a cutter later, not now

A knife and a ruler cut perfectly good bars. A cutter is a genuine improvement once you are making the same loaf repeatedly, and pointless before that.

One mould, many recipes

Resist buying a second shape early. Learning to resize any recipe to the mould you own is more useful than owning three moulds.

Multiply internal length by width by the depth you will actually pour to. In inches, multiply that by 16.3871 for millilitres. Then divide by roughly 1.46 to get the oil weight, or use the bar yield calculator.

Are cavity molds good for beginners?

They are convenient and limiting. No cutting required, but swirls are essentially off the table, each bar cools separately so they unmould later, and your bar weight is fixed to the cavity. A loaf teaches you more.

Can I use a bread tin or a milk carton?

For a first batch, yes — anything rigid, non-reactive and lined with freezer paper. Avoid aluminium, which reacts with lye. Once you are making soap regularly, a proper mould pays for itself in bars that are the same shape as each other.
