How to make solid perfume
Three ingredients, ten minutes and no alcohol at all. The only real decision is how much wax goes in — everything else follows from it.
Melt wax and a carrier oil together, stir in the fragrance off the heat, and pour. For a 15 g tin at the standard ratio that is 3.5 g of wax, the rest carrier oil, and fragrance at around 6% of the finished weight. Wax as a share of the base is the only variable that matters: too little and it melts in a pocket, too much and a fingertip picks up nothing.
A solid perfume is a fragrance held in a wax and oil base instead of dissolved in alcohol. It goes in a tin or a twist-up tube, it is applied with a fingertip, and it cannot spill in a bag — which is most of why people make them.
It is also a genuinely different product from a spray, not a version of one. There is no alcohol to flash off, so there is no lift: a solid perfume sits close to the skin and has almost no projection. The bright opening of a blend barely registers, because the light materials need that evaporation to be noticed. What you get in return is length — the same materials leave more slowly, so a solid reads for longer than a spray of the same formula.
The making is trivial. Wax and carrier oil melted together, fragrance stirred in off the heat, poured and left to set. The only decision worth thinking about is the wax share, and the table below is what it does.

What a tin takes
A trial, or a giveaway. Enough to find out whether the blend works in a wax base, which is not the same question as whether it works in alcohol.
The standard size, and the one most tins are made for. Lasts months of daily use, because a fingertip takes very little.
A large jar or three small tins from one pour. Worth making once you know the formula — melted wax does not keep well in a mixing jug.
What decides how it turns out
Wax as a proportion of the base is the whole of the texture. 15% is a soft balm, 25% is the standard, 40% is firm enough for a twist-up tube. Past that it stops releasing to a fingertip — which reads as a perfume with no smell rather than as a balm that is too hard, and sends people off adding more fragrance to fix the wrong problem.
Beeswax melts at 63 °C and is the forgiving default, with a faint honey smell of its own that shows through a delicate blend. Candelilla wax is harder — 70 °C — so use roughly a third less of it, and it is odourless, which matters for a light floral. Carnauba wax at 82 °C is harder again and very easy to overdo.
Around 6% of the finished weight, with 12% as the working ceiling — several times what a spray perfume runs at, because there is no alcohol throwing it into the air and it has to be smelled off the surface. Past the ceiling it stops absorbing into the wax and weeps out as an oily film. Your own supplier's IFRA category 5A figure is the number that binds.
Jojoba is the nicest to wear and barely goes rancid, because it is a liquid wax rather than an oil. Fractionated coconut oil is cheaper and effectively odourless. Avoid anything with a strong smell of its own — olive and unrefined coconut both compete with the blend, and both go off faster than the tin gets used.
The opening barely registers. Citrus and other light materials need that evaporation to be noticed, so an oil blend reads as though it starts at the heart. A solid is finished when it has set — there is no 28-day wait, because there is no alcohol for anything to settle out of. If you want the blend to be right, macerate the fragrance oils together first and then make the solid from the finished compound.
Making it well
Melt the wax and oil, take the jug off the heat, wait until it stops steaming, then stir the fragrance in. Added to hot wax, the lightest materials evaporate straight out of the jug — which is exactly the part of the blend a solid perfume struggles to hold anyway.
Pour a spoonful onto a cold saucer, give it two minutes and press it. That tells you the texture immediately. Adjusting a whole jug after it has set means remelting it, and every remelt costs you more of the top notes.
A pour that is too hot shrinks as it cools and leaves a dip in the middle; one that is disturbed while setting goes grainy. Pour at just above the melting point, then leave the tins alone on a level surface for an hour.
A recipe written for beeswax will set like a candle if you swap in the same weight of candelilla wax or carnauba wax. Drop the wax by about a third and test a spoonful before committing.
