Why are my bath bombs crumbling?
Nearly every bath bomb failure is moisture or pressure. Here is how to tell which one you have, and what to change next batch.
A crumbling bath bomb is almost always too dry or packed too lightly. Wet the mix until a squeezed handful holds its shape without your fingers going damp — around 23 ml for a 906 g batch — then overfill both halves of the mould and press hard enough that mix squeezes out of the seam. If it crumbles even when packed hard, add a little kaolin clay.
Bath bombs fail in about six recognisable ways, and five of them come back to the same two variables: how much liquid went in, and how hard the mould was packed. Once you can read which one you are looking at, the fix is usually a single change to the next batch rather than a new recipe.
The confusing part is that too dry and too wet can both produce a bomb that falls apart, for opposite reasons. Too dry and the powder never binds, so it crumbles as it leaves the mould. Too wet and the reaction starts early, the bomb rises, and the shell cracks off what is left. The table below separates them by what you actually saw happen.

What went wrong, and why
Figures are for a 6-bomb batch of 906 g in a 65 mm mould. The "check first" column is the thing to look at before changing anything in the recipe — it is usually not the recipe.
How wet is wet enough
Where to start on a humid day, and where to stop if your last batch domed in the mould. It will feel too dry in the bowl and pack fine.
Damp sand. A squeezed handful holds its shape and does not leave your palm wet. This is the target on an ordinary day.
Past this the mix is visibly fizzing as you work and the bombs will rise. If you needed this much to make it hold, the problem was packing pressure.
The five things that actually cause it
The single commonest cause, and the easiest to fix for free. The same 65 mm mould takes 137 g packed lightly and 180 g out of a press — a spread of about 32%. Heap both halves well over the rim, press them together hard, and twist. If nothing squeezes out of the seam, you did not use enough mix.
Powder does not bind to powder. Around 25 ml per kilo — 23 ml on this batch — is where damp sand happens, but the test is physical rather than numerical: squeeze a handful, and it should hold together without your fingers coming away wet.
Overwet mix rises in the mould as the reaction starts, and the raised shell cracks and falls off. The tell is timing: a dry bomb crumbles immediately, a wet one looks perfect for an hour and then splits. Drop to 14 ml and work in the driest room you have.
Fat coats the powder and stops the particles locking together, so the bomb never gets hard. Past about 6% of the batch — 54 g here — it will still be faintly greasy the next morning. This one is not fixable by drying it longer.
If a batch is correctly wet and firmly packed and still crumbles, add Kaolin clay at around 3% — that is what it is for. And check your epsom salt (fine): coarse crystals do not compress with the powder around them, so they leave the exact lines the bomb breaks along. Grind it, or buy the fine grade.
Fixing a batch you have already made
Break the whole thing back into the bowl, spritz it lightly, and repack it. Bath bomb mix is recoverable for as long as it has not spent its fizz — which is another reason to work in small batches while you are learning.
Wet a single handful, pack it into one cavity and look at it in ten minutes. It costs one bomb to find out whether the whole batch is going to dome, and it is the cheapest test in the craft.
Spritzing feels precise and is not — a trigger bottle varies wildly between people. Measure 23 ml into a small cup for a batch this size, and spritz from that until it is gone or the mix is ready.
A batch made in damp weather wants 48 hours rather than 24, and rather less liquid than usual. Adding more because it "feels dry" is how a humid-day batch ends up doming.
Thin plastic hemispheres flex as you press, so the pressure goes into the mould rather than the mix. Metal and thick plastic hold. The moulds guide covers which is which — it is a more common cause of crumbling than any recipe fault.
