Best fragrance oils for candles
Every oil is described as strong. Here is what to check on the spec sheet instead, and how far a bottle really goes.
Buy fragrance oils sold specifically for candles, with a published flashpoint and a stated maximum usage rate. A flashpoint at or above 185°F (85°C) covers every container wax here. At a typical soy load of 8%, one pound of wax takes roughly 36 g of oil, so a small bottle covers a test batch and little more.
Fragrance oil is the most expensive ingredient in a candle by weight and the one with the widest quality spread, but almost none of what distinguishes a good one appears in the product description. It appears on the spec sheet.
Two numbers matter more than any scent note: the flashpoint, which tells you how hot you can add it, and the maximum usage rate, which caps how much you can use. An oil without both published is an oil you cannot work with predictably.

What a pound of wax takes

What bottle size to buy
Enough for two or three test candles at 8%. Buy the smallest bottle offered until you know the oil throws.
Twelve 8 oz jars at 8%. This is the quantity most 8 oz bottles are sized for.
Only worth buying once a scent has earned a permanent place in your range.
What to check before buying
Fragrance oils for soap, reed diffusers or skincare are formulated differently and may not bind into wax at all. "Candle safe" on the listing is the minimum bar.
The temperature at which the oil’s vapour can ignite, and the practical ceiling for adding it to your melt. Add above it and much of the fragrance is gone before it binds. Most container work wants a flashpoint comfortably above the wax’s adding temperature.
Set by the oil, separate from the wax's own limit. Where the two disagree, the lower one wins — so an oil capped below your wax's 10% caps your candle.
Vanillin-heavy oils darken wax over time, sometimes dramatically. If you sell white candles, check for a vanillin content note or expect them to go beige on the shelf.
These are different properties and an oil can be good at one and poor at the other. Cold throw sells the candle on a shelf; hot throw is what the customer judges at home. Test both.
Testing oils without wasting them
Judge an oil at the load you actually pour at — 8% for most soy. An oil that only performs at its ceiling is not a strong oil.
A 4 oz jar uses less than half the oil of an 8 oz for the same information about throw. Save the full-size pours for oils that already passed.
Give soy at least a week. Fragrance keeps binding into the wax well after the pour, and a candle judged the next day will always disappoint.
You will not remember which oil had to go in at a lower temperature. Recording it next to the load turns a repeat batch into a repeat rather than a re-test.
