Best fragrance oils and essential oils for perfume
Two different products, two different crafts, and almost everyone starts by buying the wrong one for what they want to make.
For a first perfume, buy three good essential oils — one top, one heart, one base — rather than a large set of anything. A 10 ml bottle of a single material carries roughly 2 finished bottles at eau de parfum strength, so the quantities involved are much smaller than people expect. Fragrance oils are pre-composed blends and are the faster route to something that smells finished; essential oils are single materials and are what you learn on.
The first thing to settle is which of two quite different products you actually want, because "perfume oil" is used for both and they are not interchangeable.
A fragrance oil is a finished composition — someone has already blended it, usually from dozens of materials, and it is designed to smell complete on its own. An essential oil or an absolute is a single raw material distilled or extracted from one plant. An aroma chemical is a single molecule, natural-identical or synthetic. Fragrance oils are the fast route to something that smells like a perfume; single materials are what you use if you want to compose one yourself. Most people who say they want to make perfume mean the second thing and start by buying the first.
The second surprise is quantity. At eau de parfum strength a 30 ml bottle contains only about 4.5 g of aromatic material in total, split across the whole formula — so a 10 ml bottle of one oil is a great many perfumes. Buy small, buy several, and buy nothing in a set until you know what you like.
Materials worth starting with
Density matters more than it looks — it is what makes a formula converted carelessly between millilitres and grams come out wrong. The last column is how many 30 ml bottles a 10 ml bottle of that one material would carry if it were the entire compound, which no material ever is.
What to buy, in order
One top, one heart, one base, at 30/50/20. That is the entire compound of a 10 ml trial and it will teach you more than a thirty-bottle set — you can smell what each material is doing, and when something is wrong you know which row to change.
Two or three per layer, so you can substitute within a role rather than starting over. This is enough to build genuinely different perfumes from, and it is about where most people stop buying and start blending.
The point at which blends stop sounding like a list of plants. Velvety, woody and nearly transparent. Used at loads that would be absurd for a natural — it pushes everything around it forward rather than smelling of much itself. Buy one or two, understand them, and add more only when a formula demands it.
How to choose
A fragrance oil is already a composition, so it is the faster route to something that smells finished and the slower route to learning anything. Essential oils and absolutes are single materials: harder, more interesting, and the only way to compose rather than to dilute. There is no wrong answer, but blending several fragrance oils together rarely improves either of them — they were each designed to be complete.
A blend needs something in each layer. Buying four things you enjoy sniffing usually gets you four top and heart notes and a perfume that vanishes in an hour. Patchouli, Vetiver, Cedarwood are the least exciting bottles to open and the ones that make a perfume last.
Bergamot is 0.876 g/ml and vanilla absolute is 1.1 — a difference of about 26% for the same volume. A recipe converted from millilitres to grams without accounting for that is wrong in a way that is very hard to taste your way back from, which is the argument for weighing everything.
Absolutes and most aroma chemicals are strong enough that a whole trial can be lost to one careless drop, and several smell frankly unpleasant neat. A 10% dilution in alcohol or DPG makes small amounts measurable — and at 20 drops per millilitre, "one drop" of something neat can be several per cent of a 10 ml trial's compound.
A good supplier states the material, its origin where it matters, and gives you an IFRA document and a specific gravity on request. A listing that says only "premium perfume oil" is telling you nothing you can build a repeatable formula on. This is the single best filter between suppliers.
Buying well
A 30 ml perfume holds about 4.5 g of compound across every material in it. Ten millilitres of one oil is therefore a very long time, and buying large is how people end up with expensive bottles that oxidise before they are half used.
They are almost always the cheapest available grade of each oil, sold in quantities too small to blend with and too many to learn from. Three good materials beat thirty indifferent ones, and cost less.
Citrus oils oxidise faster than anything else on the shelf — bergamot and sweet orange noticeably so within a year at room temperature. Cold, dark and tightly capped roughly doubles that, and an oxidised top note smells like old furniture polish.
They are formulated to survive being burned, and their IFRA documentation covers a category that has nothing to do with leave-on skin products. Some are fine on skin and some are not, and the label will not tell you which. Buy oils sold for perfumery.
