How to make a reed diffuser
Three ingredients and one decision that matters more than the other two put together — what the fragrance is dissolved into.
A reed diffuser is fragrance oil dissolved in a thin carrier and drawn up porous reeds. Use a dipropylene glycol or isopropyl myristate base rather than a kitchen oil, at 25% of the finished blend, with rattan reeds — a 100 ml bottle takes the fragrance and the rest carrier, and flipping the reeds weekly is what keeps the throw up.
A reed diffuser is the simplest home fragrance product there is: a bottle, a blend, and sticks that carry the blend up into the air by capillary action. There is no heat, no flame and no cure. That simplicity is also why so many homemade ones do nothing at all — with nothing driving the fragrance, every part of the job falls on the base it is dissolved in and the sticks it has to climb.
The recipe that circulates most widely uses fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil, and it is the reason so many people conclude that homemade diffusers do not work. Those oils are far too heavy to travel up a reed; the blend stays in the bottle, the reeds clog within a fortnight and the room smells of nothing. Dipropylene glycol (DPG) costs little more and is what a commercial diffuser is actually made of.

It is a room product in a glycol carrier, not a perfume: if you are after something to wear, making your own perfume is a different craft with a different base entirely.
What to dissolve the fragrance in
The load a carrier will reliably hold, and how readily it climbs a rattan reed. The two bases at the top are what commercial diffusers use; the two at the bottom are what home recipes use.
A 100 ml bottle, worked out
At 25% of the finished blend. The band runs 15–30%, which on this bottle is 15 ml to 30 ml — and past the top of it the extra oil simply will not dissolve.
Everything the fragrance is not. Note that this is a share of the FINISHED blend, unlike a candle load — where the oil is a percentage added on top of the wax.
Between 4 and 12 depending on the room and the bottle neck. Reeds are the throttle — add two before you touch the fragrance percentage.
On rattan reeds at this load. Synthetic fibre reeds wick harder and empty the same bottle in 4–8 weeks, which is a trade rather than an upgrade.
What decides whether it throws
The industry base and what a commercial diffuser is made of. Odourless, holds a high fragrance share without separating, and climbs rattan at a rate that gives weeks rather than days. Fractionated coconut oil is the opposite case: The one every home recipe reaches for, and the reason so many home diffusers do nothing. It is too heavy to climb a reed properly, so the scent stays in the bottle and the reeds clog within a fortnight.
The default, and the only one worth buying first. The open channels running the length of the stick are what draw the blend up; a smooth wooden skewer has none and will do nothing. Doubling the reeds roughly doubles the throw and halves the life of the bottle — which is the adjustment to make first, because more fragrance in the bottle does not climb any faster.
A narrow neck restricts evaporation from the surface and forces the fragrance to travel by reed, which is what makes a bottle last months rather than weeks. A wide-mouthed jar is a slow air freshener with sticks in it.
15–30% of the blend, and the top of that band is a solubility limit rather than a safety one — beyond it the oil separates out and sits on top. If the room smells faint at 25%, add reeds before you add oil.
Air movement is what carries the scent away from the reeds, so a hallway with a door opening onto it throws far better than a still corner. A diffuser that seems weak is often just in the wrong place in the room.
Making one that lasts
The dry end goes into the bottle and the saturated end comes out. It is the single thing that keeps the throw up over a bottle’s life, and the thing everyone stops doing after a fortnight.
Combine the fragrance and the carrier in a beaker and stir until it is completely clear. Pouring them into the bottle separately leaves a layer of neat oil at the top that the reeds will drink in the first two days.
Essential oils are volatile and largely top notes — a citrus blend will read beautifully for a week and then be gone. Fragrance oils are formulated with heavier materials that keep travelling for the life of the bottle.
Reeds drip when they are flipped and diffuser blend takes the finish off polished wood and some plastics. A coaster or a tile under the bottle is cheaper than the alternative.
