How many candles can I make with one pound of wax?
It depends entirely on the jar. Here is the yield for every common container, and what the usual bag sizes work out to.
A pound of wax makes somewhere between 1 and 4 candles depending on the container size. In a standard 8 oz jar it is about four, because that jar takes roughly six and a half ounces of wax by weight rather than eight. Order around ten per cent over whatever the maths gives you, because wax is lost to the pouring jug on every batch.
This is a purchasing question more than a making one: you have a bag of wax and you want to know how many jars it fills, or you have a market stall to stock and you want to know how much to buy.
The answer turns entirely on vessel size, and not in the way the labels suggest. An "8 oz" jar does not take 8 oz of wax — it takes about 6.5 oz, because the label is a fluid measure and wax is lighter than water. That difference is why yields come out higher than most people expect.

What a pound gives you
A 4 oz vessel. The usual choice for testers, sample sets and market-stall impulse buys.
The commonest retail size, and the one most pricing assumptions are built around.
A pound barely covers one. Large vessels eat wax far faster than their price premium suggests.
What changes the yield
Doubling the jar size halves the yield. Nothing else on this list comes close to that effect, which is why the vessel is the first decision in costing a range.
A standard fill leaves headspace for the lid. Going to a more generous headspace takes several grams off each candle and adds up across a batch — at 90% versus filling higher, the yield difference is real.
Every pour leaves wax on the jug, the spatula and the thermometer. Over a batch that is easily a candle’s worth, which is why the practical yield is always below the arithmetic one.
If your load is a percentage of wax, the oil adds to the finished weight but not to the wax you need — so the yield here still holds. If you pour to a fixed finished weight, you need slightly less wax per candle and the yield goes up.
Sinkholes, wet spots and off-centre wicks all happen. On a production run, budget a small percentage of the batch as re-melt.
Buying wax sensibly
The arithmetic yield assumes no losses. The practical one never matches it. Ten per cent is the usual allowance and stops you finishing a run one jar short.
Melting a full bag in one go loses wax to the jug once. Melting it in five sessions loses it five times, and the price per pound saving on a bigger bag is often smaller than that waste.
